An exceptional carved sculpture of a thoroughbred horse by Cornish artist Faust Lang (1887–1973). This scuplture had been in the same family for over 80 years and was reputedly commissioned by the previous owner's parents, modelled on one of their own thoroughbred show horses. approx 11" x 12"h Signed by the artist, in carving.
The sculpture is extremely well carved with great attention to the muscle and bone structure of the subject. The added detail of the plaited mane suggests that this was specific to the commission. In excellent condition, with no cracks or repairs. There are two historic insect holes but it is most likely that these date to when the wood was initially carved.
Faust Emmanuel Lang was born in Southern Germany in 1887. He emigrated to England in 1934, settling in Mawgan Porth, Cornwall in 1936. In 1949 he moved his family to St Ives, also in Cornwall.
He features alongside such greats as Bernard Leach and Barbara Hepworth in a 1959 British Pathé documentary film about artists working in St Ives.
